Jamaica faces level five hurricane, resulting in three deaths

(MENAFN) Jamaica faced intensifying tropical storm conditions on Monday as Hurricane Melissa approached the island, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 miles (281 kilometers) per hour, according to meteorological reports.

At 8 pm ET, the Category 5 hurricane’s center was situated roughly 155 miles (249 kilometers) southwest of Kingston, moving northwest at 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) per hour. Forecasts indicated the storm would turn north overnight and head northeast on Tuesday, with its core expected to pass near or directly over Jamaica, bringing “life-threatening winds and heavy rain.”

Preparations for the storm have already resulted in at least three reported deaths in Jamaica, while meteorologists warned of “catastrophic and life-threatening” conditions.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged residents to follow safety measures, ordering evacuations in vulnerable areas. “I urge every Jamaican to prepare, stay indoors during the storm, and comply with evacuation orders...We will weather this storm and rebuild stronger,” he wrote on social media.

Hurricane Melissa has also caused fatalities in neighboring countries, with four deaths reported in Haiti and the Dominican Republic due to severe flooding and landslides.
